Talaash movie review

It is with lots of expectations that a movie like Talaash would be watched, not just because it was amirkhan productions but because it has its name associated with farhan akhthar and anurag kashyap as dialouge writers, zoya akhthar as a co story and screenplay writer! And ofcourse it has stars like amir khan, rani, kareena, naawazuddin siddiqui.....all these along with interesting trailers will make everyone wanting to watch the movie.

    But alas, I must say all that talent has not helped 'Talaash" to be a great movie. its just about okay.




    The last ten minutes of the movie have made the wonderful 2 hrs 15 minutes of it a futile effort! The movie starts with a background song "Muskaane jhooti hai" picturised on the streets of Mumbai showing all the shades of the great city from the most beautiful of its colors to the darkest of its corners. This makes on you a good impression and you become prepared to have a feast of mumbai and its mystery. The tempo slowly gets built up. Two stories run parallel to each other, one of a  bizarre case that inspector surjan (amirkhan) takes up and another one dealing with a tragedy in his personal life. The director has managed not to mix up them both and keeps vivid distinction that is necessary for a good story. What I appreciate is that this difference is maintained through out right from the beginning till the end, The two stories have no connection or link (as we begin to expect) except for a simple 'truth'?? that binds them together.

    The movie never gets deviated from its main story line, not even for a moment. All the songs go in along with the story and do not interrupt the flow. That of course is the way a mystery film has to be.

Picturization and characterization show how talented the director is. We can definitely expect some more good movies from her.

    In recent Indian cinema Talaash can be compared to kahaani not for the story but for the way the story is dealt with, for the way both the movies keep your attention all to them, for the perfect screenplay of one scene after another flowing in like a thread inside a garland! But kahaani definitely is superior over talaash because kahaani has got a clean logic. Its pitiable how Aamir Khan could have missed it?

    The story has been written with care, the screenplay good, performances apt but only the crucial logic is too illogical! Until the last ten minutes you will be waiting for something more to be unfolded, when suddenly all the tempo cracks down under one not so good 'key' that leads to the end.

    Watch the movie if you want to know who does the Talaash for whom and why? but do not expect any great mystery. it would be a good movie if you do not mind the interference of supernatural powers amidst a sherlock holmes story :)
